Catalonia - 3

From Barcelona Girlahead travelled 90 minutes southwest to the charming Mediterranean port city of Tarragona in Catalonia.

It is one of Spain’s most important Roman cities - known as Tarraco, it was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Citerior, later Hispania Tarraconensis, and became a main administrative centre of the Roman Empire on the Iberian Peninsula. Today it still has ancient walls and columns and a full-size stone amphitheatre. One can imagine belting out ‘Barcelona’ here, remembering the Freddy Mercury sung, posthumously, with his long-time idol Montserrat Caballé at the 1992 Olympics – he had died the previous year.

Today Tarragona has a population of around 140,000 and watch it become even better known, thanks to the Mayor, Tarragona born-and-bred lawyer Rubén Viñuales, above. He’s charming, a great listener and determined. More interested people should be enticed to Tarragona. Expand via quality not quantity.

Look what Tarragona has. It’s the worldwide centre of cascades - human towers (the record is ten groups high). And there are special events – Tour de France 2026, for instance. At all times there is maritime life, and some beautiful yachts. See below, and watch this space.
